A civil servant in Alexandria turns Greek history into a mirror for every reader who has failed at something or is tempted to give up. Read one poem a night, and it stays with you.
Time in these books is less a machine than a pressure on ordinary lives: a civil servant in Alexandria measuring his own failures against Greek history in «Ποιήματα», or a marriage lived out of order in The Time Traveler's Wife, where Henry vanishes into his own past and Clare waits. You come to them for the company of people trying to hold a timetable, a memory or a family together, and for the sense that the past keeps rehearsing itself.

She had a perpetual sense, as she watched the taxi cabs, of being out, out, far out to sea and alone; she always had the feeling that it was very, very dangerous to live even one day.Mrs. Dalloway · Virginia Woolf
