Poetry Classics

A 19th-century Greek poet moves between sea-tossed myth, mountain freedom-song and graveyard reckoning — poetry that still sounds improvised and alive. The poems move from sea myth to mountain songs and grave-side reckoning, lyrical and defiant, with a melancholy that still feels improvised and alive.

Feels like melancholy, longing and defiance. About freedom, love and memory.

Who it’s for

You may like it if you enjoy nineteenth-century lyric poetry that mixes myth, freedom songs and open longing. Be prepared for a formal, archaic Greek that most of Rangavis's contemporaries did not speak, so the poems ask for patience with the language.

Why read it

Read it to hear a nineteenth-century Greek voice shifting between myth, defiance and grief, and to see how formal verse can still sound unsettled and alive.

A prayer, of all things, to be turned to stone.

She asks the mountains to be quiet: he is sleeping among the stars.
