Poetry Classics

A poet walks up a mountain at Easter and finds the old gods still breathing in the light, the bread and the sea. A slow, luminous climb through mountain light, bread and sea, with a solemn lyrical voice that keeps the old gods close.

Who it’s for

You may like it if you enjoy Greek Easter imagery, nature poetry, and myths that linger in landscape and ritual. The Greek is formal and densely lyrical, with older vocabulary and long sentences, so it can be slow going if you are not used to poetry from this period.

Why read it

Its Easter ascent brings Christian feast and pagan presences together in sea, bread and mountain air, offering a spacious, unhurried lyric vision.

Why standing at the edge of a drop can feel like peace.

A heart that beats like a hammer, and a name called out all night.

A mountain that shakes, and a dance that turns a crowd into a ship.

Poems of harbours, rainy neighbourhoods and unwalkable streets, written in the 1920s by a schoolteacher who loved other people's joy more than his own. Read them for their music: charted, warm, and quietly heartbroken. The poems stay close to small things — a bird on a broken branch, wet earth, a moon over a lane — and to an ear that never stops listening. Short, lyric, made for the afternoon. A fine doorway into a poet who is still not read as widely as he deserves. A window onto interwar Greece, with its poor neighbourhoods and songs. Poems of harbours and rainy neighbourhoods from a Greek poet who loved other people's joy more than his own. Read them aloud, and the rhyme does the work: charted, warm, and quietly heartbroken.

A young poet on Lefkada hears a voice on the mountain calling him to carry a promise into word and deed. Greek lyricism at full lung. The text is scan-prone (verse, breathless voice). For Greek readers, a card by a poet who believed poetry could found a religion. It opens with a question about beauty and ends with a vision of Odysseus and Ajax. Some of the 40 samples are compelling, a few are very weak and uneditable. Tags: purely the book as a whole and Greek/English variants allowed but only if they truly reflect the content. Any modern English renderings have to be clearly translations, because the book is in Greek; but the actual feed will show the Greek passage. A good mix of cards should feel like this collection: the opening ecstatic question, a sea-bath, a thirst, the olive grove, the people, the descent into a folk mourning, a wedding dance, the spring charm, the mountain ascent, the 'other gods' closing line. I'll return all cards with Greek field text and english objects.

  1. All the ways we arrange forgetting, told in a voice that keeps catching itself.

  2. A prayer that asks for nothing, not even to live again.
