1798–1857
Solomos wrote as a poet of the Greek revolution and as a satirist, and the same restlessness runs through both: language pushed until it carries grief, mockery and hope at once. Start with «Ὕμνος εἰς τὴν Ελευθερίαν», the hymn you may know only as an anthem and which is darker and more argumentative than that, or with «Οι Ελεύθεροι Πολιορκημένοι, σχεδίασμα Β΄», where the siege of Missolonghi is held against spring, hunger and the will to stay free.
Feels like freedom, awe and longing.
Start with Ἡ Τρίχα.
You wake up sure it was only a dream. Then you open your hands.
