10 quietly unsettling novels

The unease in these books is rarely loud. It gathers in small rooms and ordinary sentences: a clerk in sunstruck Algiers who reports his own indifference to love and grief with unnerving calm, or a poor island grandmother in Παπαδιαμάντης's Η Φόνισσα who decides she is doing the world a favour and lets the narration follow her mind all the way. If you like being disturbed by a voice rather than a jump scare, these are the shelves to browse.

  1. 1.The Stranger

    Albert Camus, 1942

A clerk in sunstruck Algiers reports his own indifference to love, grief and guilt with unnerving calm.

I don’t know why, but something inside me snapped. I started yelling at the top of my lungs, and I insulted him and told him not to waste his prayers on me. I grabbed him by the collar of his cassock. I was pouring out on him everything that was in my heart, cries of anger and cries of joy.

A fierce, strange prose satire that turns Zakynthian society into a stage for hypocrisy, war, and moral judgment.

    Frances Cha, 2020

In Seoul's underground room salons, three young women navigate the cost of beauty surgery, money and loyalty, narrated by a narrator who has lost her voice.

  4. 10.Animal Farm

    George Orwell, 1945

A farm's animals overthrow their farmer and write their own rules — then discover how quickly a good slogan can be edited. A fable about power, in plain prose.
