Margaret Atwood explores the selves behind a writing life: the public image, the private memory, and the unruly mind that makes stories.
Feels like curiosity, humor and defiance. About identity, art and memory.

The villain may be the character who gives a story its pulse.
Atwood’s first published book was the poetry collection The Circle Game, which won Canada’s Governor General’s Award in 1966.

What happens when the world demands a polished exterior and a stoic silence?
Some people say, “Never let them see you cry.” I say, if you’re so mad you could just cry, then cry. It terrifies everyone.
Bossypants · Tina Fey
The difference between a job that empties you and a calling that spends you.
I’d tell men and women in their midtwenties not to settle for a job or a profession or even a career. Seek a calling. Even if you don’t know what that means, seek it. If you’re following your calling, the fatigue will be easier to bear, the disappointments will be fuel, the highs will be like nothing you’ve ever felt.
Shoe Dog · Phil Knight
Grief keeps returning you to the same place, to look for what isn't there.
The terrible darkness which was disclosed to me through this rent, continued to attract me night and day as time went on. I would ever and anon return to take my stand there and gaze upon it, wondering what there was left in place of what had gone. Emptiness is a thing man cannot bring himself to believe in; that which is not, is untrue; that which is untrue, is not. So our efforts to find something, where we see nothing, are unceasing.
My Reminiscences · Rabindranath Tagore
