About Ragtime · E. L. Doctorow

  1. 1.Beach Read

    Emily Henry, 2020

Also wonder and love. A romance novelist who has stopped believing in love inherits a lakeside cottage, a literary rival next door, and one summer to write a book she doesn't want to.

Either way, I’d fully intended to read the letter. I’d just been waiting for the right time, hoping the worst of my anger would settle and those last words from Dad would be comforting. Instead, a full year had passed and the dread I felt at the thought of opening the envelope grew every day. It was so unfair, that he should get the last word and I’d have no way to reply. To scream or cry or demand more answers. Once I’d opened it, there’d be no going back. That would be it. The final goodbye.

  2. 2.Malibu Rising

    Taylor Jenkins Reid, 2021

Also family and freedom. One family, one legendary Malibu party, and the marriage that made them: famous parents, and the children left holding the house.

The story of June and Mick Riva seemed like a tragedy to their oldest child, Nina. It felt like a comedy of errors to their first son, Jay. It was an origin story for their second son, Hud. And a mystery to the baby of the family, Kit. To Mick himself it was just a chapter of his memoir.

  3. 3.Americanah

    Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, 2013

Also love and wonder. A Nigerian woman returns to Lagos after years in America, and a love story becomes a sharp, funny reckoning with race, hair and belonging.

If you’re telling a non-black person about something racist that happened to you, make sure you are not bitter. Don’t complain. Be forgiving. If possible, make it funny. Most of all, do not be angry. Black people are not supposed to be angry about racism. Otherwise you get no sympathy. This applies only for white liberals, by the way. Don’t even bother telling a white conservative about anything racist that happened to you. Because the conservative will tell you that YOU are the real racist and your mouth will hang open in confusion.

  4. 4.11/22/63

    Stephen King, 2011

Also love and freedom. A Maine English teacher finds a door into 1958 and sets out to stop a presidential assassination, at the cost of the life he could have had.

But I believe in love, you know; love is a uniquely portable magic. I don’t think it’s in the stars, but I do believe that blood calls to blood and mind calls to mind and heart to heart.

  5. 5.The Enchanted April

    Elizabeth von Arnim, 1922

Also freedom and joy. Four Englishwomen answer an advertisement for a castle in Italy and swap grey London for a month of wistaria, freesias and unaccountable happiness.

She pulled her wrap closer round her with a gesture of defence, of keeping out and off. She didn’t want to grow sentimental. Difficult not to, here; the marvellous night stole in through all one’s chinks, and brought in with it, whether one wanted them or not, enormous feelings—feelings one couldn’t manage, great things about death and time and waste; glorious and devastating things, magnificent and bleak, at once rapture and terror and immense, heart-cleaving longing. She felt small and dreadfully alone. She felt uncovered and defenceless. Instinctively she pulled her wrap closer. With this thing of chiffon she tried to protect herself from the eternities.
  6. 6.Pride and Prejudice

    Jane Austen, 1813

Also love and family. A sharp-eyed comedy about money, manners and misjudgment, in which a quick-witted woman and a proud man keep being wrong about each other. Funnier and more cutting than its reputation suggests.

Having now a good house and a very sufficient income, he intended to marry; and in seeking a reconciliation with the Longbourn family he had a wife in view, as he meant to choose one of the daughters, if he found them as handsome and amiable as they were represented by common report. This was his plan of amends—of atonement—for inheriting their father’s estate; and he thought it an excellent one, full of eligibility and suitableness, and excessively generous and disinterested on his own part.
  7. 7.Anna Karenina

    Leo Tolstoy, 1878

Also love and unease. A society novel about a marriage coming apart and a landowner trying to build a meaningful life, full of dinner tables, fields, jealousy and philosophy.

  8. 8.The Wedding

    Danielle Steel, 2000

Also family and love. A Hollywood lawyer with a full life and a boyfriend who is still married watches her parents' glittering awards season — and starts to wonder what she is waiting for.
