1868–1920

Χατζόπουλος writes in a quiet, observant prose that stays close to the inner life of ordinary people — a man by the sea, three sisters guarding a family name, a poet in the mud of war — and lets small moments carry the weight. Start with «Φθινόπωρο» if you want the gentlest entry, or «Ο πύργος του ακροπόταμου» if you prefer a sharper look at how pride and respect can hollow out a family. Both share his patient attention to feeling and place, and neither asks more of you than to sit with them a while.

Feels like melancholy, memory and longing.

Start with Φθινόπωρο.

Hatzopoulos was a poet and critic from Agrinio who spent years in Germany; Φθινόπωρο, published in 1917, is his only completed novel and a landmark of Greek impressionist prose.

The autumn that arrives like a held breath.
