1838–1895

Paraschos writes in a rhyming demotic that carries grief and anger without straining, and the three books here share that plain, direct music: loss, exile and disappointment spoken rather than dressed up. Start with «Φύλλα», where poems about prison and inconsolable grief sit under a title that promises only leaves, or with «Παραμονή Χριστουγέννων», a Christmas Eve vision of Christ and Peter walking the waking world in search of one door still open, tender and sly by turns. «Εν περιπάτω» belongs with them too, a walk through London and Paris that finds only decline, rage and wit in the same breath.

Feels like power, faith and nostalgia.

Start with Φύλλα.

A satirist and lyric poet who attacked the politicians of his day so fiercely that his newspaper, Asmodaios, was repeatedly seized. He died on the island of Corfu in 1895.

What the traitor's kiss does to a man who is already in his grave.
