THE moon had not yet risen; but the vast of the night was all seething with stars, and bridged by a Milky Way of extraordinary brightness. There was no wind; but the sea, far as sight could reach, was running in ripples of fire,—a vision of infernal beauty. Only the ripplings were radiant (between them was blackness absolute);—and the luminosity was amazing. Most of the undulations were yellow like candle-flame; but there were crimson lampings also,—and azure, and orange, and emerald. And the sinuous flickering of all seemed, not a pulsing of many waters, but a laboring of many wills,—a fleeting conscious and monstrous,—a writhing and a swarming incalculable, as of dragon-life in some depth of Erebus.

“But where were my friends and relations? No father had watched my infant days, no mother had blessed me with smiles and caresses; or if they had, all my past life was now a blot, a blind vacancy in which I distinguished nothing. From my earliest remembrance I had been as I then was in height and proportion. I had never yet seen a being resembling me or who claimed any intercourse with me. What was I? The question again recurred, to be answered only with groans.

Και ο νέος αστυνόμος, έβγαλε το πορτοφόλι του, το άνοιξε, ετράβηξε ένα χαρτάκι, διπλωμένο εις τα δύο, άπλωσε το χέρι του από πάν’ από τα πιάτα, και μου τώδωκε για να το διαβάσω. Ήτον το μισό κομμάτι μισής κόλλας του χαρτιού εκείνου του ταχυδρομείου, που μεταχειρίζονται συνήθως εις της επαρχίες, του ριγωμένου κατά πλάτος, με τα πράσινα ριγώματα, ζαρωμένο αρκετά, τσαλακωμένο, μ’ ορατά τα ίχνη δαχτυλιών, ως να επέρασε από διαφόρους χείρας, άγραφο όλο, και μονάχα εις την μίαν των γραμμών, την πρώτην, διεκρίνοντο, λεπτά-λεπτά γραμμένες, με μικρότατα ψηφία, πέντε λέξεις: «Αυτοκτονώ. Ας μην ενοχληθή κανείς». Και από κάτω το όνομα της πόλεως, η ημερομηνία και το έτος, και ολίγο παραπέρα, η υπογραφή του αυτοκτόνου. Τίποτ’ άλλο.

By degrees, our whole party surmounting the steep, joined us, not one among them, but gave visible tokens of admiration, surpassing any before experienced. One cried, “God reveals his heaven to us; we may die blessed.” Another and another, with broken exclamations, and extravagant phrases, endeavoured to express the intoxicating effect of this wonder of nature. So we remained awhile, lightened of the pressing burthen of fate, forgetful of death, into whose night we were about to plunge; no longer reflecting that our eyes now and for ever were and would be the only ones which might perceive the divine magnificence of this terrestrial exhibition. An enthusiastic transport, akin to happiness, burst, like a sudden ray from the sun, on our darkened life. Precious attribute of woe-worn humanity! that can snatch extatic emotion, even from under the very share and harrow, that ruthlessly ploughs up and lays waste every hope.

The fading light lingered a moment on his belt and bayonet, then he passed into the shadows, drumming the echoes awake. The roll became fainter along the eastern terrace, then grew and grew and rattled with increasing sharpness when he passed the avenue by the bronze lion and turned down the western terrace walk. Louder and louder the drum sounded, and the echoes struck back the notes from the grey palace wall; and now the drummer loomed up before them—his red trousers a dull spot in the gathering gloom, the brass of his drum and bayonet touched with a pale spark, his epaulettes tossing on his shoulders. He passed leaving the crash of the drum in their ears, and far into the alley of trees they saw his little tin cup shining on his haversack.
