About The Three Musketeers · Alexandre Dumas

  1. 1.Les Misérables

    Victor Hugo, 1862

Also power and passion. A convict, a relentless inspector and a city on the edge of revolt: a huge novel about mercy, poverty and the price of a second chance.

For many great deeds are performed in petty combats. There are instances of bravery ignored and obstinate, which defend themselves step by step in that fatal onslaught of necessities and turpitudes. Noble and mysterious triumphs which no eye beholds, which are requited with no renown, which are saluted with no trumpet blast. Life, misfortune, isolation, abandonment, poverty, are the fields of battle which have their heroes; obscure heroes, who are, sometimes, grander than the heroes who win renown.
  2. 2.Treasure Island

    Robert Louis Stevenson, 1883

Also adventure and friendship. A boy finds a dead sailor's map and ends up aboard a ship where the friendliest man may be the most dangerous. Fast, funny, and the template for pirate stories.

The doctor opened the seals with great care, and there fell out the map of an island, with latitude and longitude, soundings, names of hills and bays and inlets, and every particular that would be needed to bring a ship to a safe anchorage upon its shores. It was about nine miles long and five across, shaped, you might say, like a fat dragon standing up, and had two fine land-locked harbours, and a hill in the centre part marked “The Spy-glass.” There were several additions of a later date, but above all, three crosses of red ink—two on the north part of the island, one in the southwest—and beside this last, in the same red ink, and in a small, neat hand, very different from the captain’s tottery characters, these words: “Bulk of treasure here.”
  3. 3.A Tale of Two Cities

    Charles Dickens, 1859

Also power and passion. London and Paris on the edge of revolution: a man released from eighteen years in prison, a woman who knits a register of enemies, and a crowd nothing will stop.

Releasing his arm, she laid her hand upon his shoulder. After looking doubtfully at it, two or three times, as if to be sure that it was really there, he laid down his work, put his hand to his neck, and took off a blackened string with a scrap of folded rag attached to it. He opened this, carefully, on his knee, and it contained a very little quantity of hair: not more than one or two long golden hairs, which he had, in some old day, wound off upon his finger.
  4. 4.Three men in a boat (to say nothing of the dog)

    Jerome K. Jerome, 1889

Also humor and friendship. Three friends and a fox terrier row up the Thames and fall into every small disaster available. The comedy of overpacking, bad weather and self-deception is still funny, and the digressions are sharp.

Throw the lumber over, man! Let your boat of life be light, packed with only what you need—a homely home and simple pleasures, one or two friends, worth the name, someone to love and someone to love you, a cat, a dog, and a pipe or two, enough to eat and enough to wear, and a little more than enough to drink; for thirst is a dangerous thing.
  5. 5.Madame Bovary

    Gustave Flaubert, 1856

Also power. A provincial doctor's wife reads too many novels and then marries one; the most exact book ever written about wanting a life bigger than the one you've got.

The shades of night were falling; the horizontal sun passing between the branches dazzled the eyes. Here and there around her, in the leaves or on the ground, trembled luminous patches, as if hummingbirds flying about had scattered their feathers. Silence was everywhere; something sweet seemed to come forth from the trees; she felt her heart, whose beating had begun again, and the blood coursing through her flesh like a stream of milk. Then far away, beyond the wood, on the other hills, she heard a vague prolonged cry, a voice which lingered, and in silence she heard it mingling like music with the last pulsations of her throbbing nerves. Rodolphe, a cigar between his lips, was mending with his penknife one of the two broken bridles.
  6. 6.War and Peace

    Leo Tolstoy, 1869

Five families, one invasion, and the small domestic hours that turn out to matter more than the battles. Read it for the people, not the history.

She did not know and would not have believed it, but beneath the layer of slime that covered her soul and seemed to her impenetrable, delicate young shoots of grass were already sprouting, which taking root would so cover with their living verdure the grief that weighed her down that it would soon no longer be seen or noticed. The wound had begun to heal from within.
  7. 8.Vampire Academy

    Richelle Mead, 2007

Also friendship and passion. A teenage bodyguard and her vampire best friend hide in plain sight until their past catches up, forcing Rose to fight for the girl she'd die for.

  8. 9.The Odyssey

    Homer, -800

Also adventure. The first great story about a journey home — and every stop along the way is a good reason to give up.
