Αλέξανδρος Πάλλης

1850–1935

Pallis, a wealthy Alexandrian who gave away much of his fortune, translated the Gospels into demotic Greek too — and was denounced as a blasphemer for it. The Orthodox Church condemned his Iliad as well. But note: the Iliad's first edition of Pallis' translation was published in 1904; the author's dates are 1850–1935. This fact about Pallis translating the Gospels into demotic and being condemned is well documented. Let me keep it short. Also the pitch is under 30 words. Need to add tags. Greek version needs title.

Feels like war, grief and dread.

A wife tells her husband she would rather die than be left behind.

Τότε έτσι εκείνος κοίταξε σωπώντας το παιδί τουμε θλιβερό χαμόγελο· κι’ η όμορφη Αντρομάχηήρθε κλαμένη, τούπιασε σφιχτά το χέρι κι’ είπε« Καημένε, αχ το φιλότιμο θα σ’ αφανίσει. Πες μου,» τ’ αθώο αφτό δεν το πονάς, δε λυπάσαι εμένα» που μάβρη χήρα κι’ έρημη σε λίγο θα μ’ αφήκεις ;» Τι γρήγορα όλοι οι Δαναοί θα τρέξουν να σε σφάξουν.» Μα αν είναι να σε στερηθώ, καλύτερα για μένα» να με σκεπάσει η μάβρη Γης! Γιατί άλλο πια αντιστύλι» δε θα μου μείνει, μόν καημοί, τα μάτια σα σφαλίσεις.» Μηγάρ πατέρα εγώ ’χω πια ή τη γλυκιά μου μάννα ;
