Lucy Foley

The draw in Lucy Foley is the guest list as a pressure cooker: old friends, a wedding, an island or a snowbound Highland estate, and a body somewhere in the middle of it. In «The Guest List» a remote Irish island wedding gathers people with reasons to lie, and in «The Hunting Party» a New Year's reunion at a snowbound estate brings the same closed-circle unease. Start with whichever setting appeals, though «The Guest List» is often the easier entry point.

Feels like dread, society and serenity.

Start with The Hunting Party.

Foley wrote historical fiction and commercial novels before switching to crime; she has cited Agatha Christie as the model for her closed-circle plots.

How little pressure it takes to find out what someone really is.

Some people, given just the right amount of pressure, taken out of their usual, comfortable environments, don’t need much encouragement at all to become monsters. And sometimes you just get a strong sense about people, and you can’t explain it; you simply know it, in some deeper part of yourself.
