Polemis wrote for recitation and for school benches: nightingales, marble caryatids, and a violinist's fiddle that grows sweeter as the worm eats it. Read aloud or under your breath at midnight and it works.
1862–1924
These works offer a blend of lyrical observation and dramatic storytelling. If you prefer a collection of evocative verses, start with «Ποιήματα». For a more narrative experience, consider «Ο Βασιλιάς Ανήλιαγος».
Feels like love, freedom and melancholy.

Polemis worked as a civil servant in the Ministry of Education. His patriotic verse and the school-room anthem 'Το Κρυφό Σχολειό' made his lines the most memorised of his generation.
The barman answers every accusation with a single, devastating question.

A prince raised in total darkness, a kingdom of night, and a love that can only exist before sunrise. A verse drama about daylight as both promise and danger.
