About The Perks of Being a Wallflower · Stephen Chbosky

  1. 1.Paper Towns

    John Green, 2008

Also longing and nostalgia. A boy who has loved the girl next door from afar gets one wild night with her—and then she vanishes, leaving clues meant for him.

“Here’s what’s not beautiful about it: from here, you can’t see the rust or the cracked paint or whatever, but you can tell what the place really is. You see how fake it all is. It’s not even hard enough to be made out of plastic. It’s a paper town. I mean look at it, Q: look at all those cul-de-sacs, those streets that turn in on themselves, all the houses that were built to fall apart. All those paper people living in their paper houses, burning the future to stay warm. All the paper kids drinking beer some bum bought for them at the paper convenience store. Everyone demented with the mania of owning things. All the things paper-thin and paper-frail. And all the people, too. I’ve lived here for eighteen years and I have never once in my life come across anyone who cares about anything that matters.”

  2. 2.Twilight

    Stephenie Meyer, 2005

Also love and longing. A girl moves to a rain-drenched town and falls for a boy whose beauty is inseparable from danger. Mood, appetite, and bad decisions.

About three things I was absolutely positive. First, Edward was a vampire. Second, there was part of him — and I didn’t know how potent that part might be — that thirsted for my blood. And third, I was unconditionally and irrevocably in love with him.

  3. 3.The Great Gatsby

    F. Scott Fitzgerald, 1925

Also longing and love. A short, dazzling novel about a summer of parties on Long Island and the man who throws them for one reason. Every sentence is built to be reread, and the ending is hard to shake.

There was music from my neighbour’s house through the summer nights. In his blue gardens men and girls came and went like moths among the whisperings and the champagne and the stars. At high tide in the afternoon I watched his guests diving from the tower of his raft, or taking the sun on the hot sand of his beach while his two motorboats slit the waters of the Sound, drawing aquaplanes over cataracts of foam. On weekends his Rolls-Royce became an omnibus, bearing parties to and from the city between nine in the morning and long past midnight, while his station wagon scampered like a brisk yellow bug to meet all trains. And on Mondays eight servants, including an extra gardener, toiled all day with mops and scrubbing-brushes and hammers and garden-shears, repairing the ravages of the night before.
  4. 4.Normal People

    Sally Rooney, 2018

Also love and longing. Two teenagers who ignore each other in public begin a secret intimacy that follows them through school and university, where class and misreading keep reshaping love.

Everyone is so convinced of his attraction to Miss Neary that sometimes he starts to doubt his own instincts about it. What if, at some level above or below his own perception, he does actually desire her? He doesn’t even really know what desire is supposed to feel like. Any time he has had sex in real life, he has found it so stressful as to be largely unpleasant, leading him to suspect that there’s something wrong with him, that he’s unable to be intimate with women, that he’s somehow developmentally impaired. He lies there afterward and thinks: I hated that so much that I feel sick. Is that just the way he is? Is the nausea he feels when Miss Neary leans over his desk actually his way of experiencing a sexual thrill? How would he know?

  5. 5.The Outsiders

    S. E. Hinton, 1967

Also friendship. A fourteen-year-old greaser narrates a Tulsa summer of class war, brotherhood, and the books and movies that make him feel like an outsider everywhere.

I was still thinking about it while I was doing my homework that night. I had to read Great Expectations for English, and that kid Pip, he reminded me of us—the way he felt marked lousy because he wasn’t a gentleman or anything, and the way that girl kept looking down on him. That happened to me once. One time in biology I had to dissect a worm, and the razor wouldn’t cut, so I used my switchblade. The minute I flicked it out—I forgot what I was doing or I would never have done it—this girl right beside me kind of gasped, and said, “They are right. You are a hood.” That didn’t make me feel so hot. There were a lot of Socs in that class—I get put into A classes because I’m supposed to be smart—and most of them thought it was pretty funny. I didn’t, though.

  6. 6.Safe Haven

    Nicholas Sparks, 2010

Also longing and love. A woman arrives in a small Carolina town with a new name and a locked past; a widowed shopkeeper and his two children slowly make it feel like a life.

If you love Alex now, then love him forever. Make him laugh again, and cherish the time you spend together. Take walks and ride your bikes, curl up on the couch and watch movies beneath a blanket. Make him breakfast, but don’t spoil him. Let him make breakfast for you as well, so he can show you he thinks you’re special. Kiss him and make love to him and consider yourself lucky for having met him, for he’s the kind of man who’ll prove you right.

  7. 11.The Selection

    Kiera Cass, 2012

Also love and longing. A low-caste girl is entered in a royal competition for the prince’s hand, where televised courtship, real feelings and rebellion collide.

  8. 12.Shatter Me

    Tahereh Mafi, 2011

Also longing and love. A girl whose touch is lethal is locked away—until a boy from her past appears and her own voice becomes the dangerous thing.
