Αυτόχειρ
Μιχαήλ Μητσάκης, 1896
A stranger shoots himself in a Patras hotel. A passer-by walks the simmering town at night, and the night turns the suicide into a mirror.
1868–1916
Michail Mitsakis, the first Greek novelist of modern urban life, wrote in the 1880s–90s, translated Maupassant, and died of syphilis in a psychiatric hospital — his Byronic suicide narrative appeared in 1896. Sanitized version: Mitsakis, translator of Maupassant, chronicled the Patras of gaslight and currant warehouses. He died young, after a life of literary struggle and illness. His prose influenced later Greek modernists.
Feels like melancholy, death and solitude.
A suicide note of five polite, perfectly spelled words.
