Bonnie Garmus

Bonnie Garmus writes with a straight face and a sharp eye, letting her characters say the plainly true thing everyone around them is trying not to hear. Her books share a stubborn, dry warmth: clever women who keep their dignity in rooms that would rather they didn't, and a humor that comes from watching them refuse to soften. Start with «Lessons in Chemistry», the 1960s story of a chemist pushed out of the lab and into a television kitchen, if you want the clearest sense of what she does.

Feels like ambition, wonder and family.

Garmus was a creative director in advertising and wrote the novel in her sixties; it became a bestseller, and the character of Elizabeth was inspired by a rowing teammate. It was her debut at 64. She has said the character was inspired by a feeling of being talked over, and the book went on to sell millions worldwide.

What if a child's gift is the one nobody knows how to name?
